May the 4th be with you 2016

may_4th

With the release of the new film once again it looks like the Star Wars star is in the ascendency and the resultant buzz has certainly sent ripples through the industry.

This new set of films gives yet another timeline to play around in and I’m sure that once the fiction books start to emerge then there will be plenty of material that people will start to adapt to their favourite edition of Star Wars.

For me though, I always loved the Rebellion era; as this is the one I grew up with and spent many hours watching the movies and pouring over the details of each world, life form or ship.  Some of these ended up in the various RPG books of the time and some even in the Star Wars CCG which Decipher published.

I was a little disappointed as the whole expanded universe I grew up with was put to one side and no longer regarded as canon.

Anyway back in the May 2014 blog carnival post I promised a war story from my past.

In the beginning…….

There was a comic shop near me that had just opened up and I soon became a regular there, not like the owner had a choice though 🙂 And one day a notice appeared advertising for players for an upcoming RPG.  So out of idle curiosity one night I popped along to the inaugural meeting and that was the night I really got to play Star Wars in anger.

The scenario.

Was some odd home-brew which the two GM’s worked between them, there was so many people there that two people had to administer it.  I believe the crux of the scenario was to try to find a group of Imperial spies who had infiltrated the alliance; rather than use bog standard NPCs the spies were some of the other players.

So things went a bit awry and ended up with the Imperial spies stealing the smugglers stock light freighter and tried to do a runner.  That night I was feeling pretty heroic so I decided to attempt to leap aboard the ramp as they lifted off.  Just to seal the deal I spent the one force point I had and rolled really well.

It all comes apart here as one of the other players spends a force point to shoot me; they succeeded and blast me off the entry ramp. With my character bleeding to death they proceed to fire the starships weapons into the hanger bay, causing an almighty chain reaction that with one exception kills all the remaining party.  The one survivor was the smugglers co-pilot, a wookie; who used a force point to augment their damage soak roll and ends up being blown out the hanger bay and into a nearby pond with nary a scratch on him.

Kickstarter – Unknown Armies Third Edition Roleplaying Game

Unknown Armies was always one of those games I read about and was certainly curious about trying out to see what it’s like, alas I never seemed to find the right gaming group to play it with.

Now Atlas Games are working on a third edition of the game complete with some awesome stretch goals and the chance to obtain the older supplements as well.

#RPGaDAY2015 – Day 22: Perfect Gaming Environment

RPG+a+day+2015+-+Twitter

For some reason this post was scheduled to appear last year but it appears to have been stuck in my queue after it missed the publishing date.

When I started gaming, I always wanted a gaming room of my own with; dice, miniatures and a library of gaming books all within easy reach of me and the players.

As technology progressed and after seeing the gaming room with an overhead LCD projector I wanted one so I could display maps and combats in much better 3d environment.

I have also done some gaming with Roll 20 and this is getting close to my idea of a perfect gaming environment.  I have my battlemaps, books and custom macros to make things run that much smoother 🙂

#RPGaDAY2015 – Day 21: Favourite RPG Setting

RPG+a+day+2015+-+Twitter

For some reason this post was scheduled to appear last year but it appears to have been stuck in my queue after it missed the publishing date.

Out of all the gaming settings I have access to, I have always been partial to the Forgotten Realms.

I know it’s a bit clichéd in places but I really liked the detail that went into the setting, so many interesting places to send the characters and lots to explore.

The only bits I didn’t seem to like is when they started to alter the world maps as the editions were published and even the previous parts of the world that were designed as a sandbox became defined.

It’s that time of year again when we gather to celebrate those hard working members of the gaming community the gamesmaster 🙂

If you haven’t come across this event before, there is a website dedicated to it and you can find it here: http://gmsday.com/

I also took part in it last year, my old post can be found here.

In honour of the event I’m going to get behind the screen and make use of one of the Kickstarters I backed; Space 1899.

Which Space 1899 advenutre do I run?

Kickstarter – Godbound: A Game of Divine Heroes

With me getting back to full health this means I’m starting to write again and also start to see what new gaming Kickstarter projects are coming up.

One thing I’ve started to love is the sandboxed environment which allows the players to drive the action.  When I started gaming I was very much a play by the book sort of GM and in some ways I guess I still am; but what I’ve started to try to do is push outside my comfort zone and this is where such an environment comes into play.

Sine Nomine Publishing is one company that has published a number of games and supplements that have inspired me to delve deeper and give the players what they want.

It’s worth a look and is a fairly cheap project to back unless you want the limited edition hardcover where you’ll need some serious wonga to acquire it.

Delta Green : Storage Battles

I’m still a bit under the weather which means my creativity is in full flow again.

While I was watching some TV and trying to recuperate I had a flash of inspiration.  One of the programmes I saw was Storage Wars and followed a group of people bidding on the contents of abandoned lockers and seeing what trash or treasure was inside.

This got me thinking, what if one of these lockers was a green box?   A green box is a private storage repository established by operatives of Delta Green and could contain all manner of weird stuff.

Here’s a link to a random Green Box Generator: http://www.palinola.com/projects/lab/greenbox/

Kickstarter – World Wide Wrestling RPG: International Incident

One of my other guilty pleasures is the entertainment sport known as wrestling, I have dabbled in the past with wrestling games but they always seem to lack something; while mechanically sound the atmosphere is missing.

I bought the first season of this game a little while ago and I liked what I saw; a hack of Apocalypse world which captured the excitement of the old Saturday afternoon matches broadcast on ITV.

I’m certainly backing this one, but I’m disappointed that I’m going to miss out on having my likeness captured in the game art 🙂
